Absentee Ballot Information

Michigan Absentee Ballots 2022

With the August 2nd primary fast approaching, some are still unsure about information regarding absentee ballot voting. We won’t see absentee ballots automatically mailed to every person who is a registered Michigan voter as we did last year.

Process

Any voter, with no excuse required, can request an absentee ballot online at this link. Voters seeking an absentee ballot can also contact their local clerk’s office to submit a paper application. The last day to request an absentee ballot is four days before the primary or general election. Requests may be returned in-person, by US mail, email or fax. A signature must be visible. Upon receiving the requests, local clerks will check the signature on the request to see if it matches that person’s voter registration. To receive an absentee ballot, the signatures must match.

Michiganders are able to register to vote at the same time as they are requesting an absentee ballot at this link. Finished ballots can be mailed back to the address indicated on the return envelope, or dropped off at your local absentee ballot drop box. Absentee ballots must be turned into the local clerk’s office by 8 p.m. on election day; the same deadline to arrive at the polls for in-person voting.

Voting District Changes

Due to recent redistricting of congressional districts in Michigan, voters may want to visit this link to check if their district has changed. You will also be able to locate your local clerk's office, ballot drop boxes, your polling place and have access to other valuable information.  If you need to update your voter registration, you can do so by opening this link, and selecting "Register", or you can contact your local clerk's office.

Additional facts on Absentee Ballots:

  • Absentee Ballots can be mailed to a Post Office Box, as long as that is the
address listed on the person’s voter registration.
Multiple Absentee Ballots can be mailed to the same address (such as a shelter or church) as long as that is the address on the person’s voter registration.
